Pete Williams - Gullivers

Pete Williams & his band
with support from Vinny Peculiar
and James Holt
- Gullivers, Manchester

Fresh from 32 triumphant shows as special guest on The Proclaimers’ UK tour at the end of last year, Pete Williams returns to Manchester. Pete and his band will be performing material from his last two critically acclaimed albums, SEE and Roughnecks and Roustabouts.

In 1978 at the age of 18, Pete was a founder member of DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS. Their first release"Dance Stance"was issued on Bernie Rhodes Oddball label and soon after they were invited to support THE SPECIALS on the first 2TONE tour. After recording “Searching For The Young Soul Rebels” (an album considered by many to be one of the best debut LPs by any UK band) and garnering a U.K. No1 single with “Geno” in May 1980, Pete ,along with 4 others, left Dexys Midnight Runners in Zurich returned to England and formed THE BUREAU.

THE BUREAU had top ten singles “Only For Sheep” and “Let Him Have It” in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and toured Europe and the U.S. with The Pretenders. Their eponymous album was left inexplicably unreleased and overlooked in the U.K. They disbanded in 1983. (“The Bureau” finally saw the light of day with a release in 2005).

After a short siesta Pete, as vocalist, hoofer, raconteur and front-man, formed THESE TENDER VIRTUES. Some called them “The Vicars of Vaudeville” they gigged extensively and toured Britain. The E.P. “The Continuing Saga” and a single “Waltz” were released through Cartel/Rough Trade.

In 2003 he was asked to sing on two new tracks, this collaboration soon grew into the reformation of DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS with Pete taking centre stage alongside KEVIN ROWLAND on the critically acclaimed tour of the UK and Europe “To Stop The Burning” and evolved, more recently into the 2012 album and tour 'One day Im going to Soar'

In tandem to this recent activity, Pete has released 2 Albums of his own, 'SEE' in 2012 with Richard Hawley on guitar. 'Roughnecks and Roustabouts' 2015.. Both garnering 4 and 5 star reviews in Q, MOJO and The Daily Mirror.

“La Cienega Song sounds like a hit in waiting” Daily Mirror

“Pleasingly grizzled yet groovy vignettes that whisk him from factory floor to stage door” MOJO

“His hook laden tales are the work of a genuine craftsman” Q Magazine

“What a fantastic songwriter and singer the man is. We both thought that his last record 'See' was the stand out album of 2012. Pete is a storyteller in his songs, and writes as a mature man who has lived and suffered and loved. The soulfulness that Pete brings to everything that he does is inspiring. He has the passion of a young writer, and the philosophical overview of a wise man."CHARLIE & CRAIG REID (THE PROCLAIMERS)

“For me, it's all about recognising in another brother or sister that same appreciation that another side to this life exists. We can smell each other out. Pete smells good and is a damn fine man and musician.” - RICHARD HAWLEY

“I’m a fan of the great Pete Williams. He tells terrific stories set to beautiful melodies and sung with passion, charisma and heartfelt honesty. He draws me in every time”. - IMELDA MAY

"Louis Armstrong famously said 'There are only two types of music - bad music and good music'. Pete Williams plays good music!"HORACE PANTER (THE SPECIALS)

Support comes from Vinny Peculiar. Manchester based musician and poet Vinny Peculiar (aka Alan Wilkes) has been variously described as – ‘An under sung national treasure’ (UNCUT Magazine 2014) – a warm hearted Morrissey (Q Magazine 2014) and the missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough (Irish Times 2014). He’s released eleven albums of outsider pop music to great critical acclaim, current album release ‘Down The Bright Stream’ on his own Shadrack & Duxbury Records continues to gain plaudits. Raised a Methodist in the north Worcestershire village of Catshill he trained as a nurse working in long stay learning disability & mental health hospitals, a primary influence on his most recent album Silver Meadows due 6.6.16. Much of Vinnys work is autobiographical, songs are candid, poignant and self effacing – you really need to hear them. He also writes occasional poems and runs workshops.

He has collaborated with Bill Drummond (KLF, SOUP ART) as an artist in residence and on numerous house concerts. Various bands have included ex members of The Smiths, OASIS, Aztec Camera & The Fall. He’s released twelve albums to considered critical acclaim and is primary songwriter in PARLOUR FLAMES a band he founded with BONEHEAD (ex Rhythm Guitarist from OASIS). His work is often compared to the likes of Eels, John Cooper Clarke and the more pastoral elements of The Kinks. He’s played stages far and wide opening for British Sea Power, Edwyn Collins and Luke Haines amongst others and is a former compere on the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage.

Petes's ROUGHNECKS AND ROUSTABOUTS was released 30th March 2015 .... the saga continues.
